Located on St. Mary's in the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, Scillonian Hedges aims to create a larger wetland system by transforming improved grassland into wet grassland, addressing issues of flooding on the island and enhancing habitats for migratory birds. Cornish hedges are utilised as a multifunctional tool to protect habitats, reduce freshwater loss due to wind evaporation, promote rainwater harvesting, increase wetland storage capacity, stabilise soil, and to form dykes to shield freshwater wetlands from coastal flooding. The new island wetland system has been divided into swamp, marsh and wet grassland based on landscape function and environmental characteristics.

Cornish hedge laying, an endangered traditional skill, is also a key focus of the project, while also serving as a network of pathways within the landscape. To preserve and promote this heritage, educational opportunities will be provided for visitors to learn and participate in hedge construction. The hedges they build could become a permanent part of the region's hedge system, thereby contributing to the conservation of both the landscape and the craft itself.

The whole island wetland ecosystem is linked together through Cornish hedges, ditches and scrapes, and through this system the internal environments of the various types of habitats are regulated.

Variations in the height and topography of the hedges help visitors to immerse themselves in the seasonal changes of the water levels of the island's wetland system. Tree marshes in the wetland system purify the water.

Marsh - Experiential Area

Hedge making experiences enhance visitors’ understanding of Cornish hedges. This area is where hedges once existed and have since been lost, giving visitors the opportunity to participate in the restoration of the landscape heritage.

Wet Grassland - Breeding Area for Migratory Birds

Wet Grassland - Breeding Area for Migratory Birds

This area is a major breeding area for migratory birds. Hedges of varying heights create passable pathways through the muddy area, helping visitors to immerse themselves in the interior and overall atmosphere of the wet grassland habitat.
