Unit RC14
Year 1

London, a bustling urban hub, faces significant pollution challenges from vehicles, industrial activities, and fossil fuel use. These environmental threats not only endanger public health but also hinder the city's sustainable development goals.

This thesis explores how integrating trees and green spaces into London’s urban environment can mitigate pollution and enhance urban life. Nature-based solutions, particularly trees, can absorb pollutants, reduce carbon emissions, and improve air quality. Additionally, green spaces foster physical and mental wellbeing, promote social cohesion, and support biodiversity.

In response to these challenges, the Mayor of London has launched a £3.1 million tree planting initiative to combat climate change. The initiative aims to increase the city’s tree canopy from 21%, focusing on underserved areas and vulnerable populations, with goals of cooling the city, reducing flood risk, and enhancing carbon absorption. By incorporating green spaces into urban planning, London can create a more sustainable, resilient, and human-centred environment, addressing pollution while ensuring a healthier future for all.

Project Introduction

Project Introduction

Research on green space, wellbeing, and pollution in London highlights at-risk areas. The Mayor's £3.1M initiative aims to expand tree cover in these areas, cooling the city and examining how strategic tree planting can reduce pollution.

Data Collection

Data Collection

Green space, wellbeing, and pollution, across London were analysed to identify areas at risk. Using air pollutant concentration, health, tree cover, and crime statistics, a segment analysis algorithm optimises tree placement.

Data Analytics

Data Analytics

Angular segment analysis uses integration maps for tree placement in urban design. Social media image data provides visual insights. Sunlight data helped identify planting sites, while algorithms highlight development and intervention areas.

Design Strategy

Design Strategy

An algorithm was used to analysed pollution and tree distribution, adjusting tree spacing for accessibility. Angular segment analysis optimised movement patterns, creating a balanced and functional design that visually integrates tree planting.
